Free Papers in Adamawa Fulfulde and Pulaar

ˆBADAKE and ˆBOOYATAA are papers in Adamawa Fulfulde and Pulaar for Fulani and Fulas/Pulaar speakers, containing writings of the prophets and stories of Fulas’ experiences with God. They are printed every six months.

ˆBOOYATAA is written in Pulaar-Fulakunda and Pulaar-Futa Toro (Toucouleur). There are glossaries to help speakers of each dialect understand the rest of the material. The dialects are sufficiently similar to Pulaar Futa that those speakers may also find it accessible.

These Pulaar dialects are spoken in Senegal, Guinea-Bissau, Gambia, Mauritania, western Mali, Republic of Guinea, and Sierra Leone.

ˆBADAKE is produced in Adamawa Fulfulde and the dialect spoken in the east of Niger. These dialects are spoken in Cameroon, N Nigeria, and Niger. They may well be understood by Fulas in Benin and Togo, and it would be interesting to test readability among Fulas in eastern Mali and Burkina Faso.

Language helpers needed

We urgently need more volunteer mother-tongue language helpers for checking in any of these Fula dialects. Because speakers may not always be able to write the language accurately, and because two-way discussion is essential, we need their help and advice by phone – only really practical when they are living in the West, or else have access to Skype, and cheap Internet access. There are many Fula people in UK, France and USA, sometimes as asylum seekers. If you know of Fula people in your area who might help us, please tell us.
