Locality based websites: getting found in local search engine searches

If you have a website tied to a locality – for instance a church page or community outreach site – it is essential to be easily found when people run a locality-based web search. Add these things to your website:

your street address
your town and postcode/zipcode
your county, department, or sub-state divisional area if your country uses these
your state or region, spelt out in full, and also using whatever normal two-letter abbreviation is common
your country
if your town/village is a small one, add 'near to', 'area of', (or similar) and display any major town/city that it is associated with
add 'south', 'north', 'eastern' etc as applying to your position in the town, state or region if appropriate

Ideally, these should appear on every page, as well as your homepage, not just your 'contact page' or 'how to find us' page. They can be added in small font-size in a site-wide include page-footer.

In addition, the title tag of your homepage should include your town, state/region, and probably country.

When your page is listed, test its ranking position using a variety of locality-based search terms, and compare this ranking with comparable sites.
