Questions to focus on: The Web and the world

These questions can be used at different levels. You can take 30 seconds to think about one or two. You can discuss them in a team or group of like-minded Christians. Or they can be used in a college class, including assignments and research projects, and answered in writing at any depth. They may be freely reproduced for this purpose.   1. Do you know what percentage of people are online in your country?
  2. What is the most popular website in your country, and why?
  3. Give examples of ways is information more available today, compared with before the Internet?
  4. How has the Web changed the context for such things as school homework and college research?
  5. In the poorer non-Western nations, why is there such demand for the Internet? What social groups currently use the Web in these countries, and have they been easy to reach with the Gospel by other means?
  6. What is the significance of Internet Cafes in countries where people cannot afford personal computers? How can the teaching of computing skills and provision of Internet Cafes/Centers become a means of outreach?
  7. Consider how the latest news travels quickly around the world in a friend-to-friend email cascade. Discuss how this has truly created a ‘global village’, and how it compares with a real-life small community where gossip is transmitted face-to-face.
  8. How does the Internet make ‘things whispered in the streets’ be ‘shouted from the housetops’? Discuss situations where politicians or preachers have made observations to a small domestic audience about for example sexuality or the nature of other religions, which have gone online through a local newspaper which has a website that touches the world.
  9. Do you know the current figures for worldwide sales of online p--n and gambling? Are there any ways of combating these? Are there any pressure groups in your country working to require governments to take action, and credit card companies to cease handling payments to these outlets?
  10. What options are available to filter incoming email offers of p--n as well as other spam mail? Do you know how to switch off graphics within your email program, and create filters? Are you, or other members of your family, at risk? How can you make yourself accountable to God and accountability partners, using a program such as CovenantEyes?
  11. What further changes do you expect to see in the next five years, as a result of the Web and the digital revolution?
