MAKING A LARGE INITIAL CAPITAL AT THE BEGINNING OF A PARAGRAPH

Then use

<p class="first">

at the beginning of the first paragraph on your page where you want a large capital -
or anywhere else you also want a large initial capital at the beginning of a paragraph.


Works in all modern browsers, though not version 4. You can of course vary the percentage
increase of the capital according to preference. This method gives you more control than
enclose the capital in <big> tags, and is better than using font tags to control a letter
size, since font tags are now 'deprecated' in the new style-sheet environment!

You can also specify a different color for the capital letter - and even a different font
family if you wish. Although sans-serif fonts are best for normal text on a page, there is
a case for making initial capitals as serif, particularly to avoid the effect of a 
capital 'I' looking like number '1'.
