Short stories and poetry

Evangelism through fiction

Online short stories are very popular. Since the Lord Jesus used short stories as his primary means of evangelism, this suggests a strategy waiting to be used! Yet Christians frequently overlook this possibility! We can build a site (or section of a site) around short fiction items. How can such a site be evangelistic? We suggest:

  • Remember that it is harder and slower to read from a computer monitor than a book. Use very short paragraphs and lots of white space.

  • The same principles can be applied to poetry. Here's a site that uses these principles: XQ Poetry.

  • Short stories can also be told in comic form - a very powerful medium which is not used sufficiently in evangelism.

  • If you are prepared to publish ethical secular fiction on a site, you can invite submissions from any site visitors. Expect submissions to need considerable editing for style, spelling, and grammar. Consider using volunteers to help with this. Advise submitters that you reserve the right to edit material, but that the copyright remains with them.

  • It is also possible to use published books, plays and films as a starting-point for evangelism.
